New York Mets 1, Atlanta Braves 3: The big billing for this one was Johan Santanna vs. John Smoltz, and I must say, it lived up. Smoltz pitched five scoreless innings for the Braves, only giving up two hits and notching six strikeouts, and Johan Santanna went seven innings, giving up seven hits and one run. Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer off Aaron Heilman in the eighth, giving the Braves insurance. Atlanta now holds first place in the NL East.
Boston Red Sox 4, Toronto Blue Jays 7: Josh Beckett was absolutely whalloped in his 2008 debut, pitching only four innings and giving up five runs. Roy Halladay pitched eight innings and gave up four runs on eight hits for the Blue Jays. The BoSox were swept by the Blue Jays.
Chicago White Sox 13, Detroit Tigers 2: The poor, helpless Tigers. Detroit was the team I picked to represent the AL in the World Series and, well, to be completely honest, I may have to second-guess that. It’s a long season, and there’s still time to improve, but my God: Getting swept by the Royals, and then getting kicked around by the ChiSox isn’t exactly the best way to start the season (really, getting swept by KC at any time isn’t good). Justin Verlander pitched five innings, giving up 9 runs, only four of which were earned. The Tigers are the only winless team in the majors.
