San Diego Padres 3, Atlanta Braves 5: The Padres continue their rapid descent, and though they were able to out-hit the Braves 11-9, they couldn’t muster putting more runs on the board. Jair Jurrjens, the 22 year-old that’s been a huge surprise for the Braves, improved to 4-2 on the year and now has a 2.84 ERA after six innings of one-run ball, striking out 8 along the way. Chipper Jones hit a two-run blast in the third inning, and finished 1-2 on the game, raising his batting average to a ridiculous .426. It’s probably too early to start talking about MVP’s and batting titles and, my God, a guy hitting .400 on the year, but the way he’s hitting the ball is alarming right now.

Philadelphia Phillies 4, Arizona Diamondbacks 6: The Big Unit looked so-so, but so-so was enough to get by the Phillies. Randy Johnson pitched 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 earned while striking out 6, to move to 2-1 on the season. Stephen Drew provided the offense for the D-Backs, going 2-4 and driving in 3 runs. Justin Upton went 1-3 and is now hitting .347 on the year.

Boston Red Sox 5, Detroit Tigers 0: Weird stat: Magglio Ordonez, Miguel Cabrera, Gary Sheffield, Edgar Renteria and Pudge Rodriguez are all supposed to be the daunting hitters, and all are hitting under .300 right now. In this game, the five of them went a combined 1-15, the lone hit coming from Pudge. Tim Wakefield pitched 8 innings, giving up only 2 hits, and had his knuckler dancing everywhere. Detroit dropped to 14-20, and while they needn’t hit the panic button quite yet, the time is readily approaching.

Baltimore Orioles 2, Oakland A’s 4: It’s so surprising to me that this Oakland team continues to succeed. They don’t have much as hitting goes, but their pitching has been as solid as it gets. Justin Duchscherer, who’s now 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA, pitched 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits.
