Slammin’ Sammy is back, signing a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. Texas GM John Daniels had the following to say:
Sammy seems very hungry and humbled by the last two years.
This is about giving a second chance to a guy who did a lot for the game, and who wants an opportunity to prove he can contribute. We’re not setting expectations, and he’s not asking for anything other than a chance to compete.
Good thing they’re not setting any expectations, because no one’s really expecting anything. I just wonder what it is that has humbled him over the last two years. Maybe he’s been humbled by his lousy fielding, or possibly it’s the steroid scandal he was involved in with congress. If that isn’t humbling enough, maybe it’s that every corked-bat homerun he’s hit needs an asterisk next to it.
Maybe he is humbled, after all.
