Nets 77, Cavs 81: It was a defensive game, to say the least. The Nets shot 37% from the field and were 5-20 from beyond the arch, managing only 36 points in the entire second half. Vince Carter led the way for New Jersey with 21 points, but was only 7-23 from the field. LeBron James — battling a stuffy nose; not exactly MJ’s 102 degree fever — led all Cavaliers with 21 points, also adding 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Cleveland leads the series 1-0, in what must have felt like their first “real” playoff game this year.

Spurs 111, Suns 106: The Suns got just the type of game they wanted, but couldn’t close it off in the end. With both teams in triple digits, everything looked to be going Phoenix’s way; that is, until Steve Nash collided with Tony Parker’s head, creating a cut on his nose that would force him to sit out the final 45 seconds of the game, and eventually requiring 6 stitches. “You only see things like that in a boxing match,” the Spurs’ Robert Horry said, “where a guy cuts his nose and it won’t stop bleeding. You feel bad for the guy because you want to have the best team out there at the end of the game, and he wasn’t out there.” Says Tony Parker, after seeing all the blood, “I thought I was the one who was bleeding.” The Spurs are up 1-0 on the Suns now, and have won their last four games, making everyone forget that they were ever once in danger of an “upset” in the first round at the hands of the Nuggets. In other NBA news, ESPN is quoting a “reliable source” as saying that Jeff Van Gundy will resign his duties as head coach of the Houston Rockets. Reasons for such a drastic move range anywhere from having a 7′6″ sissy at center to having absolutely no talent around Tracy McGrady.
