The Tim Donaghy story is one that I’m as tired of as anyone else, but there’s more and more details that keep on leaking out, and the most recent is Donaghy, an admitted felon, saying there were others involved in his little gambling ring.
“The letter filed today on Mr. Donaghy’s behalf contains an assortment of lies, unfounded allegations, and facts that have been previously acknowledged, such as the fact that certain NBA referees engaged in casino gambling in violation of NBA rules,” said Joel Litvin, the NBA president for league and basketball operations, in a statement. “The letter is the desperate act of a convicted felon who is hoping to avoid prison time.”
If the refs are gambling in casinos, who really cares? The Feds didn’t come down on Donaghy because he was gambling in Vegas; they came down on him because he was gambling on games he was officiating. Though I see what Donaghy’s trying to do, I’m not sure he’s got a valid point. In fact, 10:1 odds say this statement doesn’t lower his prison term at all.
