Remember when Matt Leinart was a junior and was projected to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft? Remember when he decided to come back, then fell in the draft the following year? Well, he’s gone from No. 1 pick to a guy that was taken after Vince Young and Jay Cutler, and now he’s sitting behind Kurt Warner on the depth chart.
In his last pre-season game, Leinart was 4-12 with three picks, and something like 20 yards of completions. It’s hard to label a guy “bust” at this point in his career, but if we’re already labeling Alex Smith that way, who’s actually had one good season, I think it’s safe to give the title to Leinart, who’s only real talent these days is this.

The bottom line is that Matt Leinart’s game did not translate well to the NFL game. Matt was one of the best college football QB’s in the history of the game, but he did have a ton of weapons surrounding him. Alex Smith has played and started in more games than Leinart but Smith has suffered from playing on a couple terrible SF teams. SF is young and getting better and Alex Smith is now a backup along with Leinart. Leinart was given some playing time last year and had his chance this preseason but he still lacks arm strength. Arizona is a descent team with some weapons on offense but it appears they want to win now. Otherwise Leinart would be taking the snaps under center and gaining experience. Given time and proper coaching Leinart could still make a name for himself but it is doubtful he will ever be the star he was in college.
