Steve McNair has decided to call it quits today, ending his 13 year career that was often marked by injury and absence.

“Coming out and making this decision, it was hard,” he said. “In your mind, you feel like you can play, that you can still compete. But when your mind and your body are not in accord, it’s not going to work in the National Football League.

“My mind was there. Mentally, I could go out and play. But physically, I couldn’t do it anymore. Not to the capacity that I need to help my teammates win a football game.”

Normally when a starting quarterback leaves, the team is in trouble. But when it’s your starting quarterback who’s been hurt since he was acquired, things can be okay.

Above I’ve embedded maybe Steve McNair’s greatest moment. He doesn’t get the credit for it, because his team came up one yard short and lost, but the two sacks he avoids to keep them in the game is incredible. It’s funny how a man’s legacy can hinge on one yard; McNair will probably be remembered as the guy that came up one yard short and was often injured; Eli Manning will be remembered as the guy that scrambled away and gave his team hope. Sad, but true.
