It’s been a long time coming, but Genarlow Wilson, who was sentenced to ten years in prison for getting oral sex from a girl who was 15 when he was 17, is free. It took two years, but he’s finally on his way out (they’re saying he can’t be released immediately; the court system is confusing). Best of all, he won’t be registered as a sex offender, which means he’ll be able to be in contact with his younger sister.
“Everyone had told us this is impossible,” Bernstein said, “but Genarlow never believed that. Justice is never impossible.”
The state appealed Monday’s ruling, and it is possible that Wilson, 21, could remain behind bars pending the result of that appeal.Bernstein told reporters she believes Baker is just trying to stop Wilson’s immediate release.
“It is extremely, extremely disturbing that the attorney general would take this action now,” she said Monday in Atlanta. “In essence, the attorney general is saying, ‘Keep Genarlow Wilson in prison for 10 years and keep him on the sex offender registry.’ “
So the title might be jumping the gun, but these appeals never really pan out as the appealing party hopes. As for Genarlow, I think I speak for almost everyone when I say I’m rooting for you: You got dealt a bad hand (or mouth, maybe), and hopefully all this non sense is coming to an end.
