Weis Not So Jolly For A Fat Man

Charlie Weis is suing the doctors who operated on him, claiming they didn’t notice complications after his gastric bypass surgery.

Weis alleges in the lawsuit that Massachusetts General Hospital physicians Charles Ferguson and Richard Hodin acted negligently and left Weis so close to death that he received the Roman Catholic sacrament of last rites. He was in a coma for two weeks.

The doctors maintain they did nothing wrong.

Weis reported complications, including difficulty breathing, in the early morning a day after his surgery, Mone said in an opening statement in Suffolk Superior Court. The following day, doctors performed another surgery to fix problems caused by the initial procedure.

“For more than 30 hours, Mr. Weis continued to bleed,” Mone said.

This was the first I heard of the incident. I knew he had the surgery back when he was with the Patriots — he always thought it was his weight that held him back from getting a head coaching job — but definitely didn’t know he was in a coma for two weeks.

One thing I’m certain the doctors didn’t prescribe to help with the internal bleeding: Watching the LSU game.

Ginn, Pittman Leave; Brohm To Return

Good thing Ohio State’s basketball team beat UT on Saturday, or these fans might be put on suicide watch. I can’t remember a one week period that has gone quite so badly for a single team. First, they get their asses handed to them in the National Championship game. Then, Anthony Gonzalez, who was thought to hang around for his senior season, leaves early. Now it’s Ted Ginn, Jr. And also Antonio Pittman, which really comes as a surprise.

That means that this team’s best wide receiver, tight end, running back and quarterback will all be gone next year, and there’s not even a national title to show for it. I know people will say they’re better off with Chris Wells at running back, but that’s a load of hog-wash.

In better news around the nation, Brian Brohm has decided he’ll return for his senior season. I don’t think he made this decision because he wants to come back, but rather because he’ll be a lock to be the first pick in next year’s draft. This year he would’ve had to compete with JaMarcus Russell (who’s becoming everyone’s popular first choice this year), and the Golden Boy from Notre Dame (who’s been everyone’s popular choice for a long time now).

Not only will Brohm be first pick, but he’ll probably get the Heisman, too, unless Arkansas’ Darren McFadden can really do something. Those are, like, the two players left in college whose names I know. Really.

More Players Wanting A Paycheck

The news just got worse for Notre Dame’s offense, now that Darius Walker, junior tailback for the Irish, has announced he’ll go to the NFL. This seemed as an odd move to me and to many other scouts. From what I’ve read, there’s a slight chance he’ll go first round, but most experts are saying he’s going to be second round, and might even slip to the third round. I guess when Charlie Weis held a team meeting to try and urge his 1st string defense to leave early, the wrong message was received.

Speaking of teams who got shattered in their bowl game, Anthony Gonzalez, starting wide receiver opposite of Ted Ginn, has also announced that he’ll leave early. This comes as bad news to the Buckeyes, who have also lost a Heisman winner and some kind of sprinting freak to the NFL already.
