MLB Power Rankings Galore

Here’s the Power Rankings over at ESPN, where they have the Marlins, 11-1, rightfully in the No. 1 spot. They’re followed by the Dodgers, Cubs, Blue Jays and Cards. With four of the five in the NL, is the power shifting? Or does anyone really even give a damn about power rankings, anyway?

Over at Fox Sports, Florida is No. 1, followed by the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Padres and Cubs.

Not that any of their opinions really matter, but it’s always cool to read about how well your team is doing. And when your team is the Braves, it’s always depressing to watch them fall from No. 1 to No. 15 in less than a week. A .190 batting average over the course of five games willl do that to you.

MLB Power Rankings

Here’s the link to the Power Rankings on ESPN. And here’s the link to the rankings on Fox Sports. CBS Sportsline is yet to have theirs out, though I’ll keep a watchful eye and update the post when they’re delivered. A couple of notes:

The top three in both are comprised of the Marlins, Braves, and Cardinals. ESPN likes the Braves more than the Marlins; Fox Sports is the other way around. Both think St. Louis is the third best team one week in.
Fox Sports really likes the Mariners at No. 5; ESPN thinks they’re barely inside the top 10, putting them at No. 9.
Both believe the Astros and Nationals are the two worst teams in baseball, with the Nationals taking the cake for being the lousiest. Fox Sports believes the Indians are the third worst team, while ESPN says they’re better than San Francisco and Milwaukee, who both have one more win.

Joba Arrested, Doesn’t Like New York Drivers

Above is the video of Joba Chamberlain being arrested for his DUI. In there, you’ll hear some quick shots at Yogi Berra and how short he is, and also that he can’t stand New York drivers. And that the people up north don’t believe in saying “please” and “thank you.” You’ll also see him attempt to walk the worst straight line I’ve ever seen.

If you haven’t read this over at The Big Lead yet, you need to. When A-Rod isn’t hitting a home run or illegally injecting himself with his cousin’s drugs, he’s out trying to hook up with prostitutes and bang girls he has to buy.

No. Really. That’s the story.

The Big Lead covers the whole thing here, and points out that giving the guy a hard time this year for steroids might just be a waste of time. What was once thought to be a role model for kids is now a ‘roid raging, Madonna loving, prostitute buying Yankee that couldn’t have much else go wrong.

Corey Lidle Made More Money Than Any Of Us Remember

The widow of Cory Lidle is suing the plane manufacturer for $50 million. How much, you say? Yes. Fifty million. This happened in 2006, and it’s now 2009. That’s three years, for the average math reject. That’s over $15 million per year over the three year span, and last I remember, Cory Lidle wasn’t exactly C.C. Sabathia. Not to trample on the man’s grave, but we’ll see how this pans out.

You Can Blame Barry And A-Rod All Day, But Don’t You Dare Point That Finger At Bud

In recent weeks, there have been a lot of people — journalists, bloggers, media types — that have said in all of this, Bud Selig should be held responsible. And you know what? They’ve got a point. But you know what? They can all go eff themselves.

“I don’t want to hear the commissioner turned a blind eye to this or he didn’t care about it,” Selig told Newsday in a Monday phone interview. “That annoys the you-know-what out of me. You bet I’m sensitive to the criticism.

“The reason I’m so frustrated is, if you look at our whole body of work, I think we’ve come farther than anyone ever dreamed possible,” he said, adding, “I honestly don’t know how anyone could have done more than we’ve already done.”

So don’t blame this on Bud. He’s done everything he could. And on the bright side, at least these Congressional hearings didn’t end in a tie.

Okay, It’s Time To Find His Cousin

I’m not going to take you through the entire press conference — you can watch it yourself — but a couple of things to notice from it: A-Rod has no chance of ever landing a gig acting, and the guy is either a terrible liar or incredibly dumb, or both.

According to A-Rod, his cousin injected him with steroids, but he “didn’t know what they were,” just that they were some substance from the Dominican Republic that you inject in your butt and it gives you high energy and big muscles. I know I’d be in the dark, too.

What do you do when you’ve been caught for using steroids? First, you ‘fess up, then you find the youngest — but legal — brunette with the biggest tits that you can. How the evening turns out, we may never know (with his kind of money, I can sure guess), but Deadspin has the story of what happened for a couple of hours.

A-Rod Took Steroids. And Admits It.

Other baseball players have a thing or two to learn from this. Alex Rodriguez, regarded as one of the best players of this generation, and probably all time when it’s all said and done, had “allegedly” taken steroids as of yesterday. And today, speaking with Peter Gammons, he has come clean and confessed that the test results are accurate: He is, indeed, a cheater.

When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure. I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day,” the New York Yankees star said in an interview with ESPN that was broadcast Monday shortly after it was recorded.

“Back then it was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young. I was stupid,” he said. “I was naive, and I wanted to prove to everyone that, you know, I was worth, you know — and being one of the greatest players of all time.”

“It was such a loosey-goosey era. I’m guilty for a lot of things. I’m guilty for being negligent, naive, not asking all the right questions,” Rodriguez said. “And to be quite honest, I don’t know exactly what substance I was guilty of using.”

For the record, he tested positive for Primobolan and testosterone, two drugs I’m certain you can find in some old Bonds’ urine. And speaking of Barry, doesn’t this seem a much easier route to take than facing 10 perjury charges and a multi-year sentence in federal prison?

It was a big story yesterday. It died down already today. And in a month, because he ‘fessed up, people will have forgotten he ever even took them. Quick side note: How right does Jose Canseco look right about now?
